What do I bring on my first day?
- Pencil case – filled
- Reading book
- PE kit – to leave in locker until needed
Other than walking, can I get to school another way?
It is possible to get to school by car and by bicycle. If coming by bike your MUSC wear a helmet and park your bike in the bike lock area. No scooters allowed.
How will I find my classes?
- You will be given a map. Son you’ll get used to your new classes and the layout of the school. In case you do get lost, you can always ask a teacher or a pupil for directions – they’re always very friendly!
- Other year groups should know where the rooms are if you ask them
- Ask at reception if you are really lost and they will be able to point you in the right direction
What if I get lost and I’m late to my classes?
For the first couple of weeks, teachers are always forgiving and will understand if you’re accidentally late – it happens to everyone! However, if you’re constantly late it will be taken more seriously.
Is the school big?
When you start the school will feel really big, but after a couple of weeks it will start to feel smaller and you will know your way around.
Getting to know people
How do I make friends?
You won’t have much of a problem making friends. Everyone will be just as nervous as you so just be nice to people and you’ll make friends in no time!
Work, lessons and organisation
Do you need to bring your calculator to school?
Yes, you may need it for maths
What do you have to take to school?
Stationary, diary (planner), books for lessons that day, lunch or money for lunch, homework
How can I make sure I don’t forget anything?
Pack your school bag the night before and double check before you leave your house in the morning
What should I do if I forget something?
Firstly, don’t hide it from the teacher and apologise to them. Secondly, if it’s a pen or pencil or something like that, borrow some from the teacher or a friend.
Lockers are available for students to use to store their belongings in a safe place. The use of a locker for a year costs £5.00
There will be a letter for your parent/carer to complete.
The school day
What time do I have to be at school?
You have to be at school from 8.20am and in tutor for registration for 8.30am.
When do I eat lunch?
Lunch time is at 1pm until 2pm
What is the school day timetable?
Monday – Thursday

What if I have a dentist or medical appointment?
- Sign in at reception and show your tutor the information
- If the appointment is during the day then you will need to bring a note in, ask your tutor to sign it in the morning and give it to reception when you sign out
How do you know when to go to next lesson?
The teacher will tell you when to go, we don’t have bells at BHS.
Can girls wear trousers?
Yes, there are trousers for girls and you can wear a jumper under your blazer, Boys can wear a jumper under their blazer too.
How should you wear your uniform?
With your top button done up, shirt tucked in and tie with the badge showing
How do you get Positive points?
We use a system for our positive points called “classcharts”. You can be awarded them by:
- Doing good work
- Achieving something
- Showing our ethos
- Good effort
- Service to the school
What do you get with a certain amount of positive points?
After a certain amount of merits, you will receive a certificate
- Bronze 50
- Silver 100
- Gold 150
- Platinum 200
How not to get detentions…
- Do the right thing!
BHS is a very safe school where we don’t stand for any bullying.
IF someone is being unkind to you then you should tell your tutor who will sort it out for you.
What type of bullying could there be?
In all schools there can be verbal bullying, cyber bullying and physical bullying. All of these are unacceptable and you shouldn’t suffer in silence
