Vicky Povey, Executive Headteacher

Vicky is the Principal of Burnley High School and brings to the role a wealth of experience in the secondary sector. Formerly the assistant principal at BHS, Vicky has also worked as Director for Quality Assurance and Leadership Development at Accrington Academy for seven years where she was responsible for the development of Middle Leaders, ITT provision and the establishment of a core CPD programme for the whole school.

Vicky has a special interest in Action Research Development and its place it has in training and development of staff in order to improve specific outcomes. Prior to that Vicky worked at Blakewater College in Blackburn as Head of Music and Darwen Vale High School in Darwen.


Phill Walmsley, Head Teacher

Phil is the Deputy Head of Burnley High and was previously Head of Mathematics at Mount St Joseph Business and Enterprise College in Bolton.

Emma Starkey, Deputy Headteacher

Emma is the Assistant Headteacher (Teaching and Learning) at Burnley High School. Formerly Teaching and Learning Mentor at Abraham Guest Academy, Emma has also worked as a Head of Science, Lead Practitioner and Second in Science.

Emma’s previous roles entailed the leadership of ITT, developing and delivery an extensive CPD programme and overseeing the Quality Assurance of STEM. Emma is embedding originative teaching and learning strategies that match the innovational curriculum to ensure engagement and progress of all learners at Burnley High School.

Jeff is the senior leader of Life Church, Lancashire and has been part of the leadership for 30 years including the last 16 years as Senior Minister.

He has overseen the church move into a £3 million purpose built centre, is passionate about community transformation and greater opportunity for all.

Over the last 15 years he has visited Crimea, Ukraine, Poland, Serbia and Spain many times running leadership training conferences and supporting community projects. Married to Trish, Jeff has one son Matt, and two stepchildren Adam and Amie.

He is a keen golfer, coffee drinker and boyhood Sunderland AFC fan.

Gary Entwistle

Married with 3 children, Joe, Josh & Lyd, Gary is Managing Director of Cherrytree Bakery, a business that he helped to start-up 30 years ago. Their mission is to be a great place of work making great cakes for great customers. Gary enjoys his work and making terrific cakes for the high street coffee chains and supermarkets.

Gary has been a believer for 28 years which forms the central part of his life. He also enjoys football, walking, mountain biking, keeping fit & occasionally diving.

Gary said “On a recent governor’s course I was reminded that I came from what was at one point a disadvantaged background, and so I appreciate the role a teacher can make in making a difference in a person’s life to influence and encourage them to make something of themselves. I believe they do a great job.”

Mark Hirst

With over fifteen years’ experience managing in the Third Sector, Mark is a Director of Community Solutions North West Ltd (CSNW), an innovative social enterprise committed to offering hope and opportunity to local people in the North West of England. CSNW excel in engaging with local people and Mark plays a key role developing partnerships with local agencies to meet a wide variety of community needs.

Married to Judith, Mark has three children, Luke, Leah and Elena. He is still trying to play football but slowly coming to terms with the fact that it is nearly forty years since his first visit to watch his beloved Leeds United.

Kirsty Coomber

Kirsty Coomber, is Senior Vice Principal at a local Academy. Kirsty leads on learning and teaching, training, and development and has recently introduced 1:1 mobile devices and immersive space learning within the Academy where she works.  She has taught in three schools in and around the borough during her career.

Kirsty is the designated Lead LAB Member for SEN for Burnley High School.

Alex Fort

I feel that the role of parent LAB member is vital in providing appropriate support and guidance to the leadership team at the school.

I have worked in education myself for a number of years and feel that this experience will help e work tirelessly on behalf of parents to ensure that the school continues to grow in stature and become renowned as one of the finest educational institutions in the area.


Pete Baker

Pete is married to Bryony and they have two wonderful children. Pete lives locally and is part of the leadership team of Life Church in Burnley. He also leads a national Christian organisation that helps serve schools, Churches and community organisations across the UK called the Pais Project. The local Pais team serves the ethos of Burnley High School and also serves other schools in the Burnley area.</ p>

One of Pete’s role on the Local Academy Board is as part of the Ethos sub-committee.</ p>

Nathan Ashman

I am Lead Teacher for New Technologies at St Wilfrid’s Academy in Blackburn and have been an English, Film and Media educator for 11 years.</ p>

I have been a curriculum leader and examiner for Film and Media Studies, however I know have a more cross-curricular focus on technology in education. I am an Apple Distinguished Educator and have a passion improve the learning experience of pupils, whilst preparing them with a digital skill-set that will benefit them in a world where new fields of work are planted everyday.</ p>

I do my best to share the learning of staff and students at my school and others, in order for us all to learn together.</ p>
